Antioxidants: The Key to Repairing and Preventing Future Damage
Every day the skin is exposed to elements that age the skin, and overtime the damage done by free radicals will eventually manifest in the form of wrinkles, pigmentation, and skin laxity. Using a large brigade of specific antioxidants (e.g., vitamin C and E, resveratrol, and alpha-lipoic acid) can repair and prevent further damage from intrinsic and atmospheric aging.
Smart skin care starts with using the most effective antioxidants to counter the effects of free radical damage; they can precipitate wound repair, help induce collagen, reverse sun damage, and rapidly heal inflammatory skin conditions. The goal is to use antioxidants both day and night along with a fat-soluble form of vitamin A, which should stand as the chief cornerstone of your skin care regimen. Look for a container that is devoid of light and air, and use within three months of opening for optimal efficacy.
Sunscreens are not 100% effective; however, antioxidants can fill the gap and be your extra shield of protection against free radicals. One of the most important antioxidants to use is a stabilized form of vitamin C. Over-the-counter vitamin C serums will not be effective for inducing collagen: look for a 20% medical-grade, fat-soluble form to get the best benefit from your vitamin C.
Aging is a result of many factors, but primarily, it is a result of long-term sun exposure and the effects of inadequate skin protection; however, this damage can be mitigated by a sensible regimen of antioxidants and copious amounts of vitamin A.
